PILOT KNOB LUTHERAN COMMUNIQUÉ

(Official communication to the public)

 9/19/18

Jackie DeShannon released a song in 1965 whose chorus said: What the world needs now is love, sweet love, It's the only thing that there's just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love, No not just for some but for everyone.

No one should disagree with the need for more love in our country and the world.  In the 1960’s young people were all about love and loving one another. Many were referred to as “flower children”, also known as hippies.  Unfortunately the love of the 60’s was a selfish love that often rebelled against authority and ignored morality.

We have no clue what true love is except that Jesus Christ demonstrated God’s love through his every word and action. 1 John 4:7, 8-11. Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. . . because God is love.  This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.  This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.  Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. The very nature and character of God is love, that is who he is at the very core of his being, he can do no other. Our problem is that we define his love according to the world’s idea; ‘get all you can for yourself and whatever makes you feel good’.  That is not love! God is not that kind of love. God’s love is thinking of others, putting them first, and sacrifice, but not sacrificing principle or morality and always with an eye on justice.

It is love that requires justice for wrong. Love can’t overlook sin and sin results in death. God’s love offered himself to pay the price of justice for our sin by coming to earth in human form and taking our sin upon himself on the bloody cross to pay our debt, destroy Satan, the father of lies, and secure eternal life for all who trust and follow Jesus.

That my friend includes you! He doesn’t love you less or more than anyone else. He doesn’t love you more when you are good and less when you aren’t.  His love is constant and he wants to live within you and continually cleanse you of sin through his blood.

Read and learn John 3:16 and personalize the verse by placing your name where it says: ‘the world’ and ‘whoever’. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
