I always thought when tragedy strikes it’s worse right before, during and shortly after the November – January holidays. People are looking forward to celebrations, giving and receiving gifts, holiday food and being with family. Then suddenly the bottom drops out of their life.

There’s been a lot of heartache and tragedy lately from random killings, shooting a security guard, to wild fires in California that has claimed at least 44 lives and the total loss of belongings and homes. Many are living elsewhere trying to pick up the pieces and move on while 200,000 plus people are evacuated and uncertain of the outcome. Even Paradise went up in flames leaving behind what looks like hell. How sad to lose possessions and family members to a fiery death and a recovery that will take years if not a lifetime to recover.

What we spend years working and saving for, hoping to enjoy for a life time can suddenly be lost in a matter of minutes, while a hope filled day can turn into a nightmare that changes one’s life. Nothing seems stable or certain anymore except uncertainty itself.

God has provided hope for his followers that after this life we will receive a perfect life in a perfect kingdom that will never be touched by tragedy, or deranged individuals or disappointment. God opens the door to all who trust in him to enjoy a true paradise that can never be shaken. Hebrews 12:28. Since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe.

In light of such a promising future away from all harm and pain we should focus on expressing our appreciation to God by how we live life each day. We should be thankful people rather than grumbling about what we don’t have when we have more than we need. We can also introduce people to the King of Paradise so they too can have certain and lasting hope and joy. Appreciation and contentment are cultivated, complaining is not.
