Isaiah 9:6  For to us a child is born, to us a son is given and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

The promise of a savior, the God who so loved the world, was given to Israel when they could have cared less about God and his promises.  Isaiah 1:3-4 The ox knows its master, the donkey its owner’s manger, but Israel does not know,

my people do not understand.” Woe to the sinful nation, a people whose guilt is great,

a brood of evildoers, children given to corruption! They have forsaken the Lord; they have spurned the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on him. This describes the condition of the ‘church’ at that time.  If this is what it was like among the religious, what must the conditions have been outside the church – perhaps deplorable?

Notice the confidence Isaiah has in stating the prophesy of Isaiah 9:6. It’s not future, but present, as if it already happened.  Yet it took 750 years to come to pass in the little town of Bethlehem. Who were the first to know? Shepherds who were viewed as sinners by the religious leaders because they couldn’t leave their flock to attend worship. No one outside Joseph and Mary knew, or were there others?

There were others; those who shared the news with the shepherds. The angels knew and sang for joy! Why so much joy? For one thing Jesus is “Wonderful.”  He isn’t just another man who cares for his people and shares cheer and positive thinking.  He is also God and man at once. He has no equal on earth and never will. He healed all diseases, opened the eyes of the blind, deaf ears and mute tongues, raised the dead and sent demons away scrambling and screaming. There is no need he cannot meet. He is ‘Wonderful!”

He not only heals and delivers, he forgives every sin. Zacchaeus, the crooked thieving tax-collector was promised salvation and announced he came to seek and save those who are lost.  The woman caught in adultery was not condemned and told to sin no more. To all sinners everywhere we’re told to come to him with our burden, stress, worry, anxiety and fears and he will give us rest. His promise stands today. Most people today need physical and mental rest, but more importantly spiritual rest and peace.  This comes only through knowing Jesus the God-Man who literally died in your place so you would not have to pay for your own sin through eternal death. Now that is love and “Wonderful.”  We will soon celebrate the birthday of “Wonderful.”  Will you?
