PILOT KNOB LUTHERAN COMMUNIQUÉ

(Official communication to the public)

3/28/18

The passing of Dr. Stephen Hawking, March 12, 2018 has been noted by the media and science outlets as the loss of an astrophysicist on par with the brilliance of Einstein. He also cheated death by 53 years when doctors said he had ALS at age 21 and was given two years to live. However, with the advancement of medicine and God’s grace he was given an extra 53 years to live, observe the created cosmos and discover how it all came about. He is quoted as saying the following; “We are just an advanced breed of monkey on a minor planet of a very average star, but we can understand the universe. That makes us something very special.”

“There is a fundamental difference between religion, which is based on authority, [and] science, which is based on observation and reason. Science will win because it works.”

“We are each free to believe what we want, and it is my view that the simplest explanation is there is no God. No one created the universe, and no one directs our fate. This leads me to a profound realization. There is probably no heaven and no afterlife either. We have this one life to appreciate the grand design of the universe, and for that, I am extremely grateful.”  (A design without a designer? Question added.)

“Before we understand science, it is natural to believe that God created the universe. But now science offers a more convincing explanation. What I meant by “we would know the mind of God” is, we would know everything that God would know, if there were a God, which there isn’t. I’m an atheist.”

While being brilliant in his field and with all due respect, Stephen Hawking would be considered foolish according to God’s word. Ps. 14:1; (Ps. 53:1) The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” Pr. 9:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. As far as we know from his own writings Hawking was a self-proclaimed atheist who worked hard to prove the Big Bang Theory is the cause of our universe and life. I’m at a loss at how anyone can study the universe and see the beauty and design of the heavens and conclude there is no God. If there is no God and no creation then someone please explain where matter and energy came from and where does knowledge and information come from? To me either God is eternal – no beginning or end – or matter and energy are eternal. Ps 19:1 The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

Unless there was a last minute death bed conversion which no one knows what was going on in his mind, Stephen Hawking passed into eternity without the knowledge of God. How sad for him, and that his naturalistic worldview is celebrated, a view contrary to God’s divine word and reality.  Paul says in Romans 1:20  For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

It is equally sad to think science disproves God and the Bible when in reality science points to God. While claiming to be an atheist, it appears science became his god just like so many other things that take God’s place yet are unable to save or explain why we are here, where we came from and where we are going!                                                             Pr.
