PILOT KNOB LUTHERAN COMMUNIQUÉ
(Official communication to the public)
One of the greatest things about God is that you can talk to him and he will listen and respond. Try communicating to a ‘force’ or ‘energy,’ you may as well be talking to the wind. Because God is alive and interested in you he looks forward to hearing from you every day. That’s what we call prayer – talking to God.
One way to pray is to use the acronym ACTS: Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving and Supplication. Begin your prayer with Adoration. It’s an expression of appreciating who God is in himself. This is not thanks-giving which focuses on what he has done for you. It has nothing to do with your, but everything about God’s nature and character. For example, in prayer you can appreciate that God is omnipresent – there is no place you can go where God isn’t. In the most difficult circumstances and places God is with you. Appreciate that he is sovereign – that means not one atom is out of his control. He oversees and sustains everything. Appreciate that God is love – his desire is to care and nurture you and know what true love is all about. He is not a God of war and hate. Appreciate God as one who desires to forgive sin. Scripture tells us when we confess our sins he will forgive and cleanse us of all unrighteousness.
Adoration can be done with all the other characteristics of God’s nature. Because there are so many you could take one or two a day in prayer and express your appreciation. In doing so you will be expressing your joy. Witness a beautiful sunset, rainbow or other part of creation and not only are you expression appreciation to God but the joy it brings to you.
Next week we will look at confession.
