(Official communication to the public)

I mentioned last week the dismal report on the Christian church in America from the Barna Research Group.  Worship attendance, bible study and prayer are down over the past ten years.  Christians are simply not enthusiastic about their faith or their God.  If this describes you in any way prayer is the place to begin the process of restoration.  Ask God to give you a hunger and desire to worship him, study his word and talk to him in prayer.

When it comes to reading the bible let me first say why it’s important and beneficial.  David said in Psalm 119:11 “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” It is the bible (God’s inerrant word) that tells us right from wrong, what is moral and what is immoral.   Paul tells us in Romans 10:17; Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.”  So in order for our faith to develop we must hear and read God’s word.

Where to begin?  If you are new to reading the bible on a regular basis I suggest you begin reading Genesis chapters 1-11. Take small sections at a time and understand it as real history, for that is what it is.  In these eleven chapters every doctrine is mentioned directly or indirectly.  This is the bedrock for all of scripture.

After reading Genesis then you can read one of the gospels.  Here you will meet the one referred to in Genesis 3:15 who will destroy sin’s power, death and Satan.  You will encounter the savior of mankind who loves you unconditionally and wants you to embrace him as your savior and God.

As you read don’t hesitate to underline, highlight, jot notes and make any other marks that will help you remember.

 You might also ask yourself:

  1. Who are the key people involved?
  2. What did it originally say?
  3. What does it say to me?
  4. Is there something to do? Something to avoid?
  5. Do I have a question I need to look into?
  6. Any repeated words or phrases, they are key
