PILOT KNOB LUTHERAN COMMUNIQUÉ

(Official communication to the public)

Psalm 51:5 “ Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.  Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

Have you ever heard or said; “Man is basically good? Or Man naturally desires to be and do well to himself and others. It’s only the bad influences of the world that causes one not to do what is good?”

How true is that?  According to God’s inerrant word there is not a shred of truth to it! We are basically selfish, rebellious, not good and nor seekers of God.  Scripture is clear that we come into this world as sinners, pure and simple.  Not sort-of-good-and-sort-of-bad, purely bad, from the moment of conception.  That doesn’t mean people can’t do ‘good’ things, they can and do, but generally from self-serving motives. Besides, being good will never get anyone into heaven.

Coming into this world as a sinner puts us at odds with God, actually enemies of God, and there is nothing you or I can do to change that. Will God welcome enemies into heaven?  Do his enemies want to be in heaven with him?  Does God provide blanket forgiveness to everyone because he loves them? These are serious questions, because if we get it wrong in this life there is no second chance after death.  How we respond has eternal consequences and we can’t afford to be wrong nor tell ourselves, “I’ll take my chances.” Remember eternity and forever never ends, we will never die after we leave this world.  Hebrews 9:27-28 Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, 28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him. God doesn’t want anyone to die in their sin and be separated from him forever in hell.  Is there a solution? What can be done?  Come back next week!
