PILOT KNOB LUTHERAN COMMUNIQUÉ
(Official communication to the public)
I was listening to one of the nation’s top psychiatrists, Dr. Tim Jennings, and he mentioned a report showing that 23% of Americans believe in a God of love. The rest view him as harsh, distant or vengeful.
What does the bible say and does it matter? It does matter because viewing God as a God of love has emotional and physical benefits.
So what does the bible say? 1 John 4:8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. God’s very nature is one of love, a God who is generous, self-giving and compassionate. Love is not one of his many characteristics, it is his very nature, it is his essence.
Does God love you right now? Will he love you tomorrow? Yes, without a doubt! But what if you do or say something you know is wrong? God’s love for you is not based on you earning it or deserving it. There is nothing you or I can do to deserve or merit God’s love, he loves because his nature is love.
His love is not simply in words but it is demonstrated in his actions beginning with Genesis 1:1 through Revelation 22:21. As you read the New Testament, especially the four gospels you will see nothing but loving, selfless actions toward all people. At just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. . . . But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. To appreciate and value this love keep in mind as Jesus died for sinners he was carrying the total weight of your sin and that of every human being that will be conceived.
We could think of God’s nature of love as the opposite of our nature, selfishness. It is natural to be selfish and self-seeking. We don’t even have to think about it. So God doesn’t have to think about being loving, it expresses itself naturally. I will say more in the coming weeks, but keep in mind that love is not God, but God is love. Lastly, allow yourself to think about a God of love daily and see how it affects your mind and health.
