PILOT KNOB LUTHERAN COMMUNIQUÉ
(Official communication to the public)
Happy 4th of July!
Today is the day we remember our nation’s independence from Great Britain with parades, picnics and fireworks. However, it was no picnic after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. What followed was a difficult and divinely guided war.
What made the Declaration of Independence so honorable as to risk one’s life, family and fortune? Ideas have consequences, and we all have a theology, an understanding of God that really does affect one’s life. Sam Adams (not the beer) who was very influential among the drafters and signers of the Declaration of Independence was very much directed by his strong Christian faith, belief and knowledge of the Bible. John Eidsmoe wrote of Sam Adams;
He never overlooked an opportunity to give a religious flavor to his political activities. . . Adams set aside days of fasting and prayer to seek the Lord; and by this means he gave the American Revolution the character of a moral and religious crusade.
Sam Adams believed that God and the bible were the basis of all the rights being given to Americans in the Declaration of Independence and in other founding documents. He wrote a document in 1772 called; “The Rights of the Colonists, which is viewed as a key document explaining the reason why America should sever all ties with Great Britain: the right to freedom being the gift of God Almighty. . . the rights of the Colonists as Christians . . . MAY BE BEST understood by reading and carefully studying the institutions of the great Lawgiver and the Head of the Christian Church, which are to be found clearly written and promulgated in the New Testament.”
It is clearly seen that the bedrock for our independence is the Bible, God’s holy, inerrant and infallible word providing truth and freedom in all areas of life.
The signers knew what was at stake so their appeal was not to the British King, but to God the ultimate judge of their motives and aspirations. “The British King was the super-power of Europe. His army and navy were the strongest on the planet. What hope of success could a fledgling nation have against a King whose wrath had been stirred to defend his honor and retain his possessions? The answer is found when the Founders’ declare the source from which their support would come. It would not be from the kings of ‘mankind’. It would come from the God of Creation who was their judge. They believed their Brexit was necessary because of God’s justice. And so they believed that their independence was possible because of God’s provision.” (Dr. Peter Lillback)
Our founders defined Providence “as the intervention of God in the affairs of men.” Thank about that: if there is no God then the government becomes God. If God is removed from government, schools and national life how can we be protected by ‘unalienable rights”, rights given by God our creator and not man. If government gives us our rights then the government can take them away.
We must remember and celebrate America’s independence from Great Britain lest we lose sight of God’s sovereign rule over human government. Our trust and reliance must be on God alone for anything else will spell disaster for America. While exiting Britain was of divine guidance we do not need God exiting from America.
