PILOT KNOB LUTHERAN COMMUNIQUÉ
(Official communication to the public)
Was suffering, disease, struggle and death always around?
So God created everything in six days and rested on the seventh. In Genesis 1:31 God said everything was very good. He was pleased with what he created and all living things lived in harmony and peace. Is it possible for God to look at death, disease, struggle and suffering among all living things and declare at the end of day six, ‘it was very good”?
The New Testament speaks of sin resulting in death. It speaks of a Messiah who would come, save and rescue us from sin and death. Where did sin and death come from?
The study of anthropology, geology and science in general says death suffering, struggle and disease has been around for millions of years, that is, from the beginning of time. That is how we came into existence as humans, the survival of the fittest. Question, is this what you understand reading Genesis 1-2??
Since God created everything in six twenty-four hour days and was declared very good, where did death come from? Genesis 2:17; You must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die. Adam later told his wife Eve, they could not eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil or there would be death. Here is where, how and when death entered the world: Genesis 3:6-7; When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. The moment Adam rebelled against God, when he decided to take life into his own hands and be his own God he died spiritually and began to die physically. There was no turning back the clock, the deed was done and the course was set for man’s existence in a world of sin and death until the end of time.
Remove the account of man’s fall into sin by regarding it as a myth, legend or metaphor rather than real history, what do we need saved from; why do we need a savior; and what is sin? As a metaphor (a figure of speech in which the term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance. Dictionary.com) we don’t have a point in time when sin and death came into the world, it’s always been here. Introduce millions of years into Genesis 1 and we have God rescuing mankind from the very thing he created, suffering and death.
A straight forward reading of Genesis 1-3 states clearly that mankind was created perfectly in a perfect environment. When they rebelled against God and sided with Satan (the serpent) death came into the world. That is why we get old and die and why we need a savior from sin and death.
