Pilot Knob Lutheran Church Beyond Understanding 7/9/2025
Job 37:5 God’s voice thunders in marvelous ways; he does great things beyond our understanding.
This verse comes in the midst of Job’s friend, Elihu’s, answer to Job’s question; ‘why all this suffering and loss?’ In chapters 36-37 Elihu takes note of the power of nature; rain, lightening, and thunder. His point being God Almighty is in control of the clouds; the amount of rain and we could include snow as well as storms. He has a purpose for all of it and more than likely we can’t understand. We should at times simply stand in awe of God’s power, authority, and wisdom.
Elihu draws a relationship between God’s rule over nature and His control over the affairs of mankind. We are not totally on our own, with no influence and direction from God. What may be frustrating is that God doesn’t always reveal the purpose of His ways. As Isaiah 55:5-8 states: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts neither are your ways my ways, “declares the Lord.“As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.
I would say the next time life throws you a curve, remember Job and his questioning God’s wisdom and power that is beyond our ability to comprehend, and through prayer and worship rest your life in His powerful and compassionate hands.
