God’s Deep Love

 Pilot Knob Lutheran Church 4/30/2025

I’m returning to our Sunday morning memory verses now that lent is over. Sunday’s verse for the week is John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

This verse is often referred to as the gospel in a nutshell. It explains God’s deep love for mankind and what he did to rescue us from death and the control of Satan.

This is a close parallel to Numbers 21:8-9 The Lord said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.” So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived. The lifting up of the bronze snake by moses in the middle of the people was an act of God that confronted them with a crisis of their sin, life, death, and faith. If they looked at the snake with genuine faith, they would be healed and would result in eternal life. Not to look in faith resulted in no healing or life.

In a similar fashion, Jesus was placed in the middle of humanity who suffered the ultimate crises of a corrupt and sinful nature. Jesus is the expression of God’s perfect love by becoming the perfect Lamb of God. As Jesus was nailed to a cross He is lifted up for all to see. He becomes the spiritual snake that heals any who will look upon Him in faith from the venomous bite of sin and receive forgiveness, healing, and eternal life.

Jesus was sent not to condemn sinful man, but to deliver from death and Satan’s control. Have you looked to the crucified and risen Lamb of God for deliverance from death?

Christmas Eve in a German Labor Camp during WWII

We prayed that God would miraculously
sustain our strength; each day our food rations
diminished so the German soldiers on the

after all of us Christians had prayed for
physical strength, the neighboring farmers
again rallied for us.
