Pilot Knob Lutheran In The Beginning 10/2/2024
As many of you who attend Pilot Knob Lutheran, every other Sunday we try to memorize or become familiar with a Bible verse, as Psalm 119:11 says: I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.
Last week and this week our verse is: Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Why is that important? Because it gives us answers to some of life’s most important questions: where did we come from; who am I; does life have any purpose; where is life going?
“In the beginning,” earth, space, time, and all life had a beginning. Matter and energy are not eternal. If there is a beginning there is also an end. As Genesis tells us about the beginning, Revelation tells us about the end.
Genesis does not try to explain God, it simply states that he is and always was and will be. God is the one who chose to create and be an active part of his creation. Genesis 1:1 eliminates any other possible explanation for life. It nails the lid on the coffin of evolution and any variation of it. That is in part why the creation account is frequently attacked. Discredit the very first verse in scripture and it begins an explosion that brings down the house. Any other view of life’s origin is made up by man’s very limited understanding of life and his ideas frequently change with the prevailing winds.
Also no human being was there in the beginning of days 1-5. Adam and Eve were created on day six and did not see what took place prior, but they had no reason to doubt since they were walking and talking with God in the garden. The only eye witness is God himself and he clearly tells us he is the only one responsible for life.
Since God created all life we are accountable to him alone. He sees and knows what we do and think, and his desire is to help us and lead us to himself. Who are we? We are men and women created in the image of God with an eternal soul. Our nature is corrupt due to Adam and Eve’s sin of rebellion and we are in need of God’s forgiveness and love. What is in store for all who trust in His Son Jesus the Christ? Eternal life.
Anytime you hear a reference to millions of years, or hundreds of thousands of years, close your ears and remind yourself of Genesis 1:1. The bible is God’s truth and not a wild guess built upon man’s rebellion from God which took place six thousand years ago.
