Not by Might

Pilot Knob Lutheran Church             Not by Might              5/29/2025

Zechariah 4:6

‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.

It was a monumental task rebuilding the temple and Jerusalem after 70 years of neglect while in Babylonian captivity. It wasn’t a matter of hiring construction crews to remodel or restore. It involved stiff opposition from neighbors who pulled political shenanigans and violence. It would have been easier to give up and assimilate with the surrounding people (pagans).

At times, probably more often than not being obedient to God’s word will bring about opposition and even trouble due to the nature of spiritual warfare. That doesn’t mean we are out of God’s will, but likely at the center. When that happens what do you do? Consider the words of Zechariah 4:6

The success and power behind Zerubbabel, the governor and overseer of construction was not political power or military might. It was the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God was behind everything that took place leading up to rebuilding to completion.

Psalm 33:16 No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength.  All the strength, wisdom, abilities we have function far better when surrendered to God. consider the hymn, ‘Rock of Ages that includes these words: nothing in by hand I bring; simply to the cross I cling.”  When we have nothing, when we are broken we are more likely to cling to the cross.  Invite the Holy Spirit to help you in everything you do and don’t rely on yourself or think you don’t need to pray.

Comfort

We don’t really know the extent of someone’s pain or hurt unless we’ve experienced it ourselves. We may say to someone grieving; ‘I know how you feel,’ unless you’ve been in a similar situation and even then not completely for each person’s experience is unique.

A New Year’s Perspective

A new year and new beginnings. We all hope for a better year every January. It’s a 50/50 chance that a new year will be an improvement or live up to our expectations.
