You are Holy

Pilot Knob Lutheran Church          You are Holy          8/13/2025

1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

The context of 1 Peter 2:9, is a comparison of those who have rejected Jesus as Messiah and savior and those who have not. Unbelievers have consciously rejected God’s son as the only way for forgiveness, peace, hope, and salvation.

In contrast, believers are like stones in a building each one working together to build the Kingdom of God, i.e., to bring the lost into a saving relationship with Christ. However, like any building it must have a solid foundation; a foundation of truth and not wishful thinking.

Also when Peter wrote these words it was a time of radical change in one’s relation to God. Prior to our Lord’s resurrection people could not go directly to God in prayer. They went through the priest who then brought their requests to God. The priest was the intermediary between God and man. However, since the first Easter everyone can come to God directly as Jesus has become our intercessor, our go-between. As Peter says; we are a holy priesthood, so we can pray directly to the Father on behalf of others.

Notice what we are as believers: chosen by God to be His child, priests in that we can pray for others (intercessory prayer), part of a holy nation and bought by the blood of Jesus to be His child. With all of that don’t look at yourself as worthless or insignificant.

Expectations

n roughly six months we will celebrate the birthday of the King. Our attention will be drawn to God taking on flesh and becoming one like us and the fulfillment of the promised Messiah.

Know This.

As followers of Jesus Christ, we like to dwell on the positive promises in scripture such as: eternal life, victory, God’s presence and so on. What we don’t want to be reminded of is the fact that we are hated by the unbelieving world and are at war with darkness. Why else would we sing: Onward Christian Soldiers, The Battle Belongs to the Lord, Lead on, O King Eternal or Faith is the Victory and many more?

Miracles and Criticism

Sunday, we saw the irony of two blind men calling Jesus the “Son of David.” They could not see Him yet they believed He was the long-awaited Messiah who would be known as the “Son of David” according to Isaiah 9:7. The blind men could see this even before Jesus’ disciples and religious leaders.
