Thankful

Appreciation Day

Thanksgiving is a day dedicated to expressing appreciation. A holiday not about us, not about national achievements or victories, but focusing outside ourselves to the only One who is responsible for everything, without exception. Yes, we work hard, achieve great things, many invent things to make life easier and diligence in farming that has resulted in better-than-expected yields in light of last summer’s drought.

Who or what do we give thanks? We have many people to thank for providing the stuff necessary for life, and appreciation is important to express daily to those who provide what we need. However, nothing that we have, nor the people who supply goods and services, or the safety we enjoy is solely provided by us, it’s all from God. There is nothing we have or enjoy that doesn’t come from the gracious hand of God.

Leviticus 7:13 Along with their fellowship offering of thanksgiving . . .  Israel offered many types of sacrifices to God and here we have a sacrifice of thanksgiving, gratitude and appreciation. Often their gratitude was given for a deliverance, or from sickness, for a blessing received or death: Psalm 56:12-13 I am under vows to you, my God; I will present my thank offerings to you.  For you have delivered me from death and my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before God in the light of life. This sacrifice was more than saying thank you, it was an actual sacrifice they presented to God.

We must be about expressing genuine thanksgiving to God each day for His free gifts of forgiveness, grace, faith, salvation and more. Take time next Thursday to “count your blessings one by one” and tell God you appreciate all He does and while you’re at it tell others you appreciate them.
