Burning Man

Pilot Knob Lutheran              Burning Man                  9/6/2023

Have you heard of the “Burning Man” before now? Hard not to with the recent flooding at Black Rock City. Heavy rains flooded the 400 square mile desert, stranding some 70k attendees who paid anywhere from $575 to over one thousand dollars for the week-long festival. It originated on June 21, 1986 in San Francisco on Baker Beach and has grown ever since.

What is it? “Burning Man is an annual week-long festival where people from all over the world go to build a temporary city in a harsh desert environment in order to participate in creating and experiencing art, community and spirituality, all with radical self-expression without judgment.” (Spiritual Counterfeit Project Journal Vol. 36 2012) Burning Man describes it as: “. . an annual experiment to temporary community dedicated to radical self-expression and radical self-reliance.”  While much could be said about its origins and societies that are involved, for this shout article suffice it to say what goes on there can be summarized by Deuteronomy 18:10b11 Let no one be found among you who. . . , who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead.” Nearly every form of New Age, LGBTQ+, pagan, satanic, and deviant sexual expression is taken to the extreme. It’s indoctrinating people into a pagan and dark worldview that God will judge. Dt. 18:12 Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord; because of these same detestable practices the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you.

This is yet another indication of where our country and world is heading; a very dark road with an unimaginable and unexpected end. However, we as Christians are called to live blameless lives before God and to:  Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. This is why it is said: “Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Ephesians 5:11-16 Pray for a spiritual awakening before it is too late.

Sweet Surrender

Perhaps a common misconception about Christianity is that walking with God in
righteousness will greatly reduce trials and trouble. A misnomer is if you suffer it’s because of sin in your life.

Learning to Wait

The communique is going to follow a new line of thought. It will be a follow-up on Sunday’s message with application and more information.

WAIT!

What is your preference; waiting or instant gratification? Instant or a least fast is preferred by far. We have: ‘Insta-Lube’ for fast oil changes, microwave ovens, instant potatoes and coffee, fast food restaurants, minute rice, insta gram and the list goes on.

Armor

Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
