Children at Risk – Refer September 23, 2026
The 4R Model approach to helping young people includes: Recognize, Relate, Respond and Refer. This offers practical help for parents and any one who has regular contact with young people.
Remember, their world is far different than the one we experienced. Similar temptations just repackaged and far more secretive, and subtle. However, I believe peer pressure is much greater and real relationships can be shallow and distant given the nature of social media.
After doing ones best with the first 3R’s, sometimes what is needed is beyond what we can offer or beyond our knowledge, and ability. At that point, referring to someone with expertise is necessary and not a sign of weakness, but a sign of humility and wisdom.
At times there are concerns that become urgent. If a young person is experiencing suicidal ideation, even passively, that must be taken seriously. If struggling with anxiety, depression, addiction, or another issue in a way that is affecting home life, school, sports, relationships or simple day to day functioning then those are signs that more help is needed.
It is not failure to say; “I need help with this child.” It is really the most loving thing you can do. It says I care about you and I want you to get the help needed because you are worth it.
No one has all the answers, but working together can draw on experience and knowledge and wisdom we may not have. The bottom line is that God is a God of hope, and hope is what bridges the gap between despair and resilience.
