Might

Not By Might

Pilot Knob Lutheran          Not By Might             5/15/2024

Some of you remember the difficulty organizing and rebuilding the church after it was set on fire July 3, 2000. Plans were needed, money financed, construction company secured and of course meetings and more meetings.  Imagine the difficult challenges of rebuilding the temple in Jerusalem after its destruction seventy years prior. People had to be released from captivity hundreds of miles away. Assessment of the enormous undertaking, gathering supplies, temporary and or permanent homes for the workers. To top it off, there were no gas-powered machinery or electricity.  In addition to these challenges, those who returned had not-so-nice neighbors doing everything they could to discourage them from rebuilding. Each man had to carry his sword in one hand and a tool in the other.  At the end of the day, they overcame the enemy not by political persuasion, threats or by the sword. Zechariah 4:6 “This is what the Lord says to Zerubbabel: It is not by force nor by strength, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. There is a place and time for the sword and war, however, these instruments for self-defense and national defense bow to the Spirit of God who keeps us safe and secure. God directed the stone that David slung at Goliath’s forehead. Yes, he was very skilled with the sling, but in the end, God directed the rock and removed the Philistine giant.  It is not by man’s might, wisdom or skill alone but by the Spirit of the LORD Almighty.Pr. Freedom

Galatians 5:1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. We all want to be free to make our own decisions, think what we want and speak what is on our minds, just so it doesn’t incite violence.

Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost

Think about it. “Too many Christians see the study of their playbook, the Bible, as an inconvenient obligation to endure and wonder why their Christian lives are so ineffective and boring.” -Dr. Karl Payne

Fear

There is a lot of fear in our world and our lives these days. The fear of the unknown, illness, natural disasters, violence, being make to look like a fool, dark spirits, failure, and the list goes on. Jesus repeatedly said to His people, ‘Do not fear,” “fear not,” and “do not be afraid.” How could he say that to those living in a violent world in both the Old Testament and the New?

Testing

James 1:12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.
