Pilot Knob Lutheran Church Guard Your Heart 9/10/2025
Proverbs 4:23 Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Proverbs has much to say about a father (parent) giving instruction to his son (children). It is their primary responsibility to instill in them not only faith in God but obedience to God’s word. That is; learning and practicing morality, knowing right from wrong and why. This will greatly aid in keeping one from walking down a road that leads to destruction.
The son is told to guard his heart. What is the heart? It refers to his spiritual, emotional, and intellectual life as well as his ability to critically evaluate situations and exercise his will. This is good advice for all at any age. Why is this important? Because the source of life comes from it. The Hebrew is very clear that the source of life comes from the heart.
This is an illusion to the Holy Spirit who lives in every believer through faith and the Word of God. It is God who gives and sustains life and alerts us to temptations, and strength to resist, otherwise we cave in and lose sight of God and his standard.
How can one guard his heart? Proverbs 4:24-25 Keep your mouth free of perversity; keep corrupt talk far from your lips.Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. Turn away from sinful speech. Not only is one to turn away from perverse and corrupt speech and avoid those who promote false doctrine, but to remove oneself when possible from foul language and filth and degrading ideas. Romans 16:17-18. I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people. The most effective way to teach this is not solely by instruction but modeling. What are you teaching your children or grandchildren through your actions?
