Made New

What is Heaven Like?

Prior to entering heaven with a new and glorified body the earth and heaven (outer space) will be made new upon Jesus’ return.

You may have asked: what does that mean for planet earth: will it be torched and refurbished or totally gone and created new? 2 Peter 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. The word translated “destroyed” carries the idea of being broken up and disintegrating: to dissolve something coherent into parts. This is not annihilation of the earth and heaven, but a total destruction by fire. This fire is not the result of a nuclear explosion. Man does not have the capability to completely destroy planet earth and all of outer space and all evil. It will occur by God’s command not man’s actions.

As a result of that destruction there will be a total renovation of our world and the total absence of sin and evil. Isaiah 65:17, 25 “See, I will create new heavens and a new earth.
The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind. The wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox, and dust will be the serpent’s food. They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain,” says the Lord. We see here the animal kingdom will exist and be in perfect peace and harmony. This will include all creation to be restored as in the first Eden. Animals will not be wild and fierce and nothing will die. It well indeed be a new heaven and earth and not a return to the original creation, pre-fall, but a heaven and earth and bodies that have never existed before; without temptation to sin, without the satanic serpent and without any and every form of selfishness.  Revelation 21:1 Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth, “for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea.

All of this and so much more we don’t deserve or earn. It is all granted by God’s unearned love and favor through faith in Jesus Christ alone.

Isaiah 55:10-11 As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

Isaiah 55 mentions the power and activity of God’s Word. I noted last Sunday that His Word is creative, and active. It is spoken, written and personified in Jesus Christ.
