God is Involved

Pilot Knob Lutheran         God is Involved                7/17/2024

I realize the news media is flooding the air waves and our minds with the assassination attempt. It is a big deal and I don’t want to ignore it as though it doesn’t matter. I think it also takes time to process how close the bullet came to Donals Trump’s head and how close he came to being murdered and how that would have changed the political and cultural landscape. Turning at the last milli-second saved his life.  Even Trump said; “it was God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening.”

Either God is involved in everyday life or he isn’t at all. Yes, God spared his life for a reason which is yet to be known, I will not speculate. This should also be a wake-up call to the church to recognize the power of hate, evil and spiritual warfare we are engaged in as a country, whether we like it or not. So, how should the church respond? Recognize that God was directly involved and offer thanksgiving. Also, that God and the church would provide the comfort to Corey Comperatore, the firefighter’s family who lost his life shielding his wife and daughter as well as two others who were critically injured.

Psalm 107:19-22 They cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He sent out his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind. Let them sacrifice thank offerings and tell of his works with songs of joy.

Can prayer be a weapon to change this divided country? Yes. But not prayer alone. As the familiar verse says: if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14. We, including the church must turn away from evil, and seek God’s righteousness. In our praying we must cry out for a spiritual awakening. Ditch the apathy, indifference, and if-I-feel-like-it attitude toward God and his word.

Yes, God still cares for and loves America and is calling his people to seek his face and live like their life and liberty depends on him.

Ingratitude

Ingratitude often results from forgetting who God is, what He has done for us, and what He promises. “Ingratitude is a searing wind which dries up the springs of pity, the dew of mercy, the streams of grace.”

People travel to wonder at the heights of mountains, at the huge waves of the sea, at the long courses of rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motions of the stars; and they pass by themselves without wondering.
