His Face Shine

Pilot Knob Lutheran  His Face Shine  8/21/2024

We continue with Aaron’s benediction in Numbers 6:24-26: “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.” Last week we saw that the pronoun ‘you’ is singular personal referring to you as an individual and not you all. God is speaking to you by name, and mentions it six times.

The blessing mentions the LORD’s face shinning upon you. This takes us back to Moses on Mount Sinai when he was in God’s presence and receiving the Ten Commandments. That experience of smoke, lightening, loud thunder and ta trumpet blasts brought terror for those on the ground. This was a dramatic display of God’s presence and power. However, God came to Moses not in terror, but grace, love and mercy.

The Ten Commandments were given as an act of love so the nation and world would know how to honor and love God and live in peace with his neighbor. What God is saying to all is that He will never shame you, he doesn’t come in disgust, dread, or disdain.

Remember how Moses came down from the mountain? His face was shining because he had been in the glorious presence of Almighty God for forty days. He was a reflection of God and so must we in a darkening world.

So, may God’s face shine upon you and give you his grace, mercy and love.

More on the benediction next week.

Ingratitude

Ingratitude often results from forgetting who God is, what He has done for us, and what He promises. “Ingratitude is a searing wind which dries up the springs of pity, the dew of mercy, the streams of grace.”
