Jesus’ death in the Old Testament

Pilot Knob Lutheran    Jesus’ death in the Old Testament    3/27/2024

Last week we discovered the truth about a future resurrection in the Old Testament from the book of Job.

Today, as we approach Good Friday, is there anything in the Old Testament about Jesus (Messiah) being crucified? Yes. From the very beginning we get a glimpse of the Messiah’s suffering. Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head and you will strike his heel.” The Messiah will “crush your (Satan) head. This refers to the total defeat of Satan. “Bruse your (Messiah) heal” refers to a serious blow but not deadly. Yes, Jesus died, but not for long as Easter announces. Satan was crushed and his defeat will be eternal damnation in the lake of fire when the Lord returns.

In Psalm 22:1-2 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish? My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest. We immediately think of Jesus calling out from the cross, in excruciating pain, both physically and spiritually as the Father leaves him temporarily to pay for your sin and mine. Now think back when you experienced great suffering be it physical, emotional, spiritual or a combination of the three. Did you cry out to God with similar words wondering where God was in His silence? Why does God allow the suffering of his people and remain silent? I don’t know, but silence does not equal absence, abandonment, or indifference.

Psalm 22:16-18 Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce my hands and my feet. All my bones are on display; people stare and gloat over me.They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment. More images of Good Friday using metaphor, simile, and hyperbole to stimulate our imagination of the Father’s abandonment of the author of Psalm 22 in his pain. Yet literal abandonment for our savior, who suffered, died, and experienced hell so you and I would never be abandoned by God and upon death proceed immediately to heaven.

Remember, Easter makes no sense without a bloody Good Friday.

Knowledge and Good Sense

As we read through the book of Proverbs, we encounter words such as knowledge and good sense. How do they differ from wisdom?

Ninth Sunday after Pentecost

“It is time that we all began to live for eternity- not time, and for Christ – not ourselves. We must realize that our public effectiveness is largely based on our private relationship with God.”

God is Involved

I realize the news media is flooding the air waves and our minds with the assassination attempt. It is a big deal and I don’t want to ignore it as though it doesn’t matter. I think it also takes time to process how close the bullet came to Donals Trump’s head and how close he came to being murdered and how that would have changed the political and cultural landscape. Turning at the last milli-second saved his life.  Even Trump said; “it was God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening.”

Eighth Sunday after Pentecost

The Constitution specifically sets aside Sunday from any governmental work; Christianity is the only major
religion in the world with a Sunday Sabbath.

What is Wisdom

Continuing with the topic of wisdom as portrayed in the book of Proverbs, we need to understand that true wisdom is God’s gift to us. Wisdom resides with God and He freely shares it as we seek Him and follow Him. It does not come from man’s intellect. As Paul says in 1 Corinthians 3:18-19a, 20b Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you thinks that he is wise in this age, he must become foolish, so that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the sight of God… “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile. What wisdom we have comes from above.
