Patriotism,

Self-Evident

Pilot Knob Lutheran Church          Self-evident              6/25/2025

In just two days we will be celebrating America’s 249th anniversary or birthday. We should be proud and honored that we live under the longest running constitution of any country. Sadly, for many today patriotism is very low and nonexistent for some.

Patriotism, love of country, needs to be taught by families to their children. We can not rely on society or government schools or colleges to teach true patriotism or the original history of America’s founding.

Consider what should be a well-known passage from the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence:

“We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all men (mankind), are created equal, and endowed by their Creator, with certain unalienable Rights, that among these, are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

To begin with, truth has been up for grabs for the past twenty years and more. It has become relative or subjective, nothing absolute.

“Endowed by their Creator.’ The Creator is none other than the God of the Bible. What has he endowed us with? Unalienable Rights. That means truths that do not come from the government, cannot be surrendered and therefore, truth’s that the government cannot take away. What are they. “The right to life.” This stands at the head because with out life none of the others would matter.

There is also liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The pursuit of happiness does not mean we get to do whatever we want to make us happy. Happiness, 249 years ago was defined as the pursuit of virtue, because only by pursuing virtue can we be truly happy and free.

There has never been a freer country in the world as is America, nor as powerful. This is because we have put God our Creator first and strive to follow His word. That is rapidly changing and we need to stand firm with God and our armed forces.

Teach and demonstrate love of country and love of God.

Freedom

Galatians 5:1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. We all want to be free to make our own decisions, think what we want and speak what is on our minds, just so it doesn’t incite violence.

Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost

Think about it. “Too many Christians see the study of their playbook, the Bible, as an inconvenient obligation to endure and wonder why their Christian lives are so ineffective and boring.” -Dr. Karl Payne

Fear

There is a lot of fear in our world and our lives these days. The fear of the unknown, illness, natural disasters, violence, being make to look like a fool, dark spirits, failure, and the list goes on. Jesus repeatedly said to His people, ‘Do not fear,” “fear not,” and “do not be afraid.” How could he say that to those living in a violent world in both the Old Testament and the New?

Testing

James 1:12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.
