Testing

October 8, 2025           Testing

James 1:12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

Tests and trials, we all have them, and we must persevere through then without taking our eyes off the Lord. Trials are often the difficulties we face in daily life that could eventually derail our trust in God. It can also include many forms of persecution for being Christian and speaking truth.

The word Testing was used to determine the quality and purity of precious metals, such as gold and silver. The trials we encounter can either keep us close to God or diminish our faith and trust. Trials are to be endured, while temptations are to be resisted so they do not refer to the same.

To withstand a trial is not to give up on God when life gets rough. Rather it’s a time to press into God and His Word, where together faith is forged and His faithfulness is experienced.

The result is twofold: first you will be blessed by God. That doesn’t mean “happiness,” but living each day under God’s grace. For God provides the faith as well as the second result; the crown of Life. Not necessarily a crown in this life but a reference to eternal life which again is a gift of God.

“Too many Christians see the study of … the bible as an inconvenient obligation to endure and wonder why their Christian lives are so ineffective and boring.” Dr. Karl I. Payne

Don’t’ give up or give in when tested because it produces strength of character and trust to face what may come.

Know This.

As followers of Jesus Christ, we like to dwell on the positive promises in scripture such as: eternal life, victory, God’s presence and so on. What we don’t want to be reminded of is the fact that we are hated by the unbelieving world and are at war with darkness. Why else would we sing: Onward Christian Soldiers, The Battle Belongs to the Lord, Lead on, O King Eternal or Faith is the Victory and many more?

Miracles and Criticism

Sunday, we saw the irony of two blind men calling Jesus the “Son of David.” They could not see Him yet they believed He was the long-awaited Messiah who would be known as the “Son of David” according to Isaiah 9:7. The blind men could see this even before Jesus’ disciples and religious leaders.

Three in One, Does it Matter?

When discussing the trinity with someone who doesn’t believe it or is confused, I learned from experience that it does not help to use ‘trinitarian texts’ such as the great commission in Matthew 28 where it mentions the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
