Fear

Pilot Knob Lutheran Church Communique Fear               October 15, 2025

There is a lot of fear in our world and our lives these days. The fear of the unknown, illness, natural disasters, violence, being make to look like a fool, dark spirits, failure, and the list goes on. Jesus repeatedly said to His people, ‘Do not fear,” “fear not,” and “do not be afraid.” How could he say that to those living in a violent world in both the Old Testament and the New?

2 Kings 6:15-17When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. “Oh no, my lord! What shall we do?” the servant asked. “Don’t be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”

And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. (Daniel 10:10-21).

When the servant of Elisha’s eyes was opened by God he could see what Elisha saw and his courage in the face of danger. Those fighting for us far out number those opposing us.

1 John 4:4 ….the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. If God is for us who can stand against us? People may hate us and threaten us, but does it matter? As a follower of Jesus Christ they can’t do anything beyond God’s loving care and knowledge or remove our name from the book of life.

There are many doors that allow fear to enter our lives and right behind fear are dark spirits. The most common door and the widest is unforgiveness. Refusing to forgive and holding on to bitterness and resentment is being willing to accept from God but refusing to give the same gift to others. In the end fear and unforgiveness both represent lies, insult God, and should not control a growing child of God. 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Expectations

n roughly six months we will celebrate the birthday of the King. Our attention will be drawn to God taking on flesh and becoming one like us and the fulfillment of the promised Messiah.

Know This.

As followers of Jesus Christ, we like to dwell on the positive promises in scripture such as: eternal life, victory, God’s presence and so on. What we don’t want to be reminded of is the fact that we are hated by the unbelieving world and are at war with darkness. Why else would we sing: Onward Christian Soldiers, The Battle Belongs to the Lord, Lead on, O King Eternal or Faith is the Victory and many more?

Miracles and Criticism

Sunday, we saw the irony of two blind men calling Jesus the “Son of David.” They could not see Him yet they believed He was the long-awaited Messiah who would be known as the “Son of David” according to Isaiah 9:7. The blind men could see this even before Jesus’ disciples and religious leaders.
