Pilot Knob Lutheran Knowledge and Good Sense 7/17/2024
As we read through the book of Proverbs, we encounter words such as knowledge and good sense. How do they differ from wisdom?
Knowledge is more than facts about the things we learn about in life. It involves our awareness of the situation we find ourselves at a given time. No one should be oblivious to what is going on around them. Knowledge also includes the ability to incorporate the facts we learn into everyday life. It involves seeing and applying what we learn and to understand what is going on instead of floating blissfully through life in ignorance.
Knowledge of God is not accumulating facts and information about God, it implies a relationship with Him through faith that will guide our lives. Proverbs 2:5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. “Knowledge of God” involves knowing God as a person as in a relationship. Proverbs 2:6 For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. Here we see knowledge being used as a synonym for wisdom.
Good sense is not equal to ‘common sense.’ Rather it is the ability to follow the ways of God even when our circumstances point us in a direction that appears more logical or desirable. Proverbs 19:11 A person’s wisdom yields patience; it is to one’s glory to overlook an offense. We must not run off and take things in our own hands or ‘wisdom’ without waiting and listening for God’s direction.
As we read Proverbs, perhaps one chapter at day, keep these definitions in mind as they show up in passages. God is the source of all knowledge and wisdom and is willing to share it to those who continue to seek and ask.
