Pilot Knob Lutheran Consider 10/16/2024
1 Samuel 12:24 But be sure to fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you.
This verse which is our memory verse for Sunday comes at an interesting time. For Israel, they would no longer be judged by God’s prophets, but a king. However, Samuel was asked to pray for the people and, even though he would be replaced by a king he would continue to teach them God’s ways.
We are coming up on an election, a possible and hopeful change in leadership. Our responsibility is to pray for leaders and our nation regardless of who is in charge.
Samuel summarizes his teaching in the above verse. ‘Fear the LORD’ means we show reverence for his name and being. Respect who he is, the God who created you, loves you and knows you. He is also the God who determines where we spend eternity, based on faith and love in his Son Jesus Christ.
Fearing God doesn’t mean we avoid Him, but lovingly serve Him. How can we do that? Express gratitude, worship regularly, obey His principles for healthy living and learn His Word, and talk to Him. Do all this with whole hearted devotion and not out of obligation or duty.
What aids in fearing and serving God is remembering His faithfulness to you. Stop and reflect on how He has provided for your needs, answers to your prayers and all He promises for those who love and serve Him This reflection is important for individuals and the nation, especially how divided we are and there is so much hate, confusion, fear, and lies. God is the only one we must put our hope in for He alone has authority to heal our land.
