Not Alone

Pilot Knob Lutheran Not Alone 12/11/2024
Psalm 9:7-10 The Lord reigns forever; he has established his throne for judgment. He rules the world in righteousness and judges the peoples with equity. The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.

When we pray to God, we do so with faith that God not only hears us but he rules the created order; he is LORD! That stands in contrast to the threats of the wicked whose power is limited. God’s throne as ruler or king is established for judgement. When we face difficulties or oppression from evil, we have hope in the all-powerful and permanent Kingdom of God in that he is at work on our behalf.

Trust in his kingship or authority confirms our certainty between God’s rule and that of earthly governments. What characterizes his rule? It is forever, he will be just and will be righteous. There is nothing crocked about God or any compromise in his judgements. That gives us hope in the long-run and faith for today.

We can’t put lasting hope in governments or any world leader. Man’s authority is often corrupt and his power limited. Not the God who created all things. Therefore, it is safe and beneficial to place our hope and trust in the Lord because he promises to never forsake us. The flip side is that we are to seek him by draw near to him in prayer, worship, and study.

This does not mean we will be spared pain, suffering and disappointment in life. It means God will be with us through it all and the difficult times are when we double down seeking God’s mercy and presence. The result? He will show up in ways we don’t expect and according to his timing. He is always at work in the believer’s life.
He is, Immanuel, God with us. (Matthew 1:23)

Expectations

n roughly six months we will celebrate the birthday of the King. Our attention will be drawn to God taking on flesh and becoming one like us and the fulfillment of the promised Messiah.

Know This.

As followers of Jesus Christ, we like to dwell on the positive promises in scripture such as: eternal life, victory, God’s presence and so on. What we don’t want to be reminded of is the fact that we are hated by the unbelieving world and are at war with darkness. Why else would we sing: Onward Christian Soldiers, The Battle Belongs to the Lord, Lead on, O King Eternal or Faith is the Victory and many more?

Miracles and Criticism

Sunday, we saw the irony of two blind men calling Jesus the “Son of David.” They could not see Him yet they believed He was the long-awaited Messiah who would be known as the “Son of David” according to Isaiah 9:7. The blind men could see this even before Jesus’ disciples and religious leaders.
