What is Wisdom

Pilot Knob Lutheran         What is Wisdom                  7/10/2024

Continuing with the topic of wisdom as portrayed in the book of Proverbs, we need to understand that true wisdom is God’s gift to us. Wisdom resides with God and He freely shares it as we seek Him and follow Him. It does not come from man’s intellect. As Paul says in 1 Corinthians 3:18-19a, 20b Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you thinks that he is wise in this age, he must become foolish, so that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the sight of God… “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile. What wisdom we have comes from above.

So, what is wisdom? According to Proverbs it is the knowledge and the ability to apply what one knows. Wisdom carries with it the ability to live in accordance with God’s plan and will. Wisdom will show up in everyday practical matters and in interpersonal relationships. There is a lot to wisdom, for it depends on reasoning and the ability and willingness to learn. Proverbs 1:5-6 let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance—for understanding and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise. Pr. 9:9 Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning.

Wisdom, though it comes from God does not fall from the sky or become implanted in our brain while we sleep. It is the result of learning. More specifically, studying what God has provided about himself and life, the bible.

Wisdom is to be sought after like searching for a buried treasure. (the documentary: Oak Island). Are you interested in growing wise? Are you willing to invest time studying God’s word? If so, you will grow in wisdom that is superior to the world’s. Prior to your studying or reading, pray. James 1:5-6 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt.

Ingratitude often results from forgetting who God is, what He has done for us, and what He promises. “Ingratitude is a searing wind which dries up the springs of pity, the dew of mercy, the streams of grace.”
